Work is set to begin on Monday 14 January to widen access to the new Inverness Campus at Beechwood.
The 20-week contract to widen Culloden Road is being developed by Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE).
Wills Bros Ltd. were awarded the contract from the Highland Council, which amounts to a total of £1.5m.
The works will involve widening the existing road from two to four lanes over its length between Caulfield Road North and the southern approaches to the Inshes Overbridge.
New access will be provided to the Campus, currently under construction, immediately opposite the existing A9 slip road.
Advanced signage has been installed to warn drivers of the likely delays on the road into the city.
A traffic management company is being employed to ensure delays and disruption are minimised.
