The Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland (RIAS) has announced Iain Connelly FRIAS as its new President Elect.

Mr Connelly will take up the role on 17 May at the 2013 RIAS International Convention in Strathpeffer.

He will be President of the organisation for two years and takes over from Sholto Humphries PRIAS.

Mr Connelly was awarded the position following a unanimous vote by the RIAS Council.

Sholto Humphries PRIAS said: "Iain Connelly has made a very significant contribution to the RIAS, particularly our Government liaison and lobby over the last few years. His role in local government gives him a very acute understanding of many of the issues of most concern to architects at present, including de-skilling and procurement. He is a thoroughly decent and likeable individual who will, I am sure give tremendous service as the next President."

Mr Connelly is a graduate of Edinburgh College of Art and has been on the RIAS Council since 2004.

He said: "The Royal Incorporation does a tremendous job on behalf of its members and promoting the benefits of improving Scotland’s built environment. I am very honoured to be elected as its next President and will give my utmost endeavours to support and grow the standing, reputation and endeavour of the RIAS."
