One of Edinburgh’s best known night clubs and arts facilities is being given £75,000 towards the refurbishment of its new venue.

The Bongo Club in Edinburgh is moving to the basement of the Edinburgh Central Library building after the lease of its previous home, Moray House, was cancelled.

Creative Scotland announced on 7 November it would be granting Bongo Club with £74,805 to revamp the new space and make it accessible, as well as to buy lighting and sound equipment.

The organisation is donating £1m in Small Capital Awards to invest in the arts across the whole of Scotland.

The Bongo Club was set up in 1996 and moved to University of Edinburgh’s Moray House in 2003.

The group had their lease terminated a year early, leading to a campaign to save the venue and find it a new home.

The new licence at Central Library will run until June 2014. Bongo Club is required to carry out improvement works and pay 5% profit.

Iain Munro from Creative Scotland said: "These Small Capital awards will help theatres, galleries and cinemas increase access to local communities; enable young people to learn valuable skills using the latest in digital technology; and assist organisations purchase equipment to stage performances in venues throughout Scotland – and so much more."
