Angus Council has announced it will be receiving additional funding to help build social housing for rent across the county.

The Scottish Government is giving an extra £588k of grant funding to the Council and housing associations through the affordable housing supply programme.

The extra injection will take the amount available to the council and its partners to £3.177m for the next two years up to March 2015.

Angus Council housing spokesperson, Councillor Donald Morrison, said: "I am delighted that our request to the government for more funding has been successful. We can never receive enough money to build affordable housing and this will be a boost to those seeking new homes across Angus. It will enable us to continue our ambitious programme of building affordable and energy efficient homes, and will help reduce the pressure on our waiting list that bit more.

"It should also provide an important opportunity for the local construction industry to compete for the additional projects in the area, which would bring benefits for the local economy in terms of employment and training."
