£13.4m Hub Planned For Glasgow Uni

A £13.4m sports and social facility is to be built at the University of Glasgow.

The plans would see the Glasgow University Union (GUU) on Gibson street demolished and replaced with the five-storey hub, which would then be connected to the Sports and Recreation’s Stevenson Building on Oakfield Avenue.

The GUU has existed since the 1960s and is most famous for hosting the Hive; a weekly nightclub. It is one of two union buildings at the University; the other being the Queen Margaret Union.

An application to Glasgow City Council is due to be submitted by the end of November.

If planning is granted, the GUU could be demolished in February. Construction is due to begin in Spring 2013.

The new Stevenson Hive Building would contain a new nightclub, four court activity hall, gym and studio space.

The development forms part of a wider masterplan which includes the redevelopment of the Western Infirmary site.

Professor Anton Muscatelli, Principal & Vice-Chancellor of the University of Glasgow, said: "The student experience is central to what we offer at the University of Glasgow and this development will greatly enhance both our sporting and social facilities at the Stevenson Building and the Glasgow University Union.

"It is an ambitious project and one that is part of our ongoing strategy to improve and invest in an innovative and efficient way.

"What will emerge will be a truly dynamic, high-quality facility that will be used and appreciated by staff, students and the wider local community."
