A strategy to regenerate the waterfront at Stranraer has been temporarily put on hold.

The move came after the Labour group expressed fears that the wider regeneration of the town was being overlooked.

It invoked a clause to bring the issue back to next full meeting of Dumfries and Galloway Council.

The planning committee agreed last week on spending plans for the waterfront following a failure to secure EU funding.

But now the concerns put forward will see the move reconsidered.

The spending plans for the town were based on a budget of £2.4m.

But there were fears that the proposals, which were voted through by the Conservative/SNP administration, had allocated a third of the funding to the refurbishment of the West Pier, environmental improvements and design work for future marina developments.

There are still other options to be considered in the new year, including the development of a slipway.

The Labour group said they were supportive of the new developments, but that consideration should be given to projects proposed by the community to regenerate the whole town.

Although the suggestion was rejected, the opposition councillors have now made use of a 12-signature clause which will see the waterfront strategy re-discussed during the next council meeting.
