Work to demolish the former Bankhead Academy in Bucksburn began yesterday, 10th September.
Parts of the school were badly damaged in a fire set in June and had to be taken down because of the extent of fire damage and to ensure that the site and remaining structures were in a safe condition.
A contract for demolishing the rest of the school buildings has now been awarded to Lawrie (Demolition) Ltd. It is anticipated that the demolition of all buildings on the Bankhead Academy site will take about 17 weeks to complete.
There are numerous interconnected buildings on the site, which divide into three distinct sections: the original granite building and its granite extensions; a three storey steel framed block; and a three storey hexagonal block.
The granite from the buildings will be set aside for re-use and other materials salvaged from the demolition works will be recycled where possible.
