Dundee Wins £1m To Finish Douglas Terrace

Funding has been secured to help upgrade the final piece of the jigsaw in Dundee City Council's major improvement project to the Douglas Terrace walkway, linking Stannergate with Broughty Ferry.

Nearly £500,000 is being committed by the sustainable transport charity Sustrans, from the Scottish Government's funding to improve cycling infrastructure, and will be matched by the city council to raise £1m.

The raised structure at the Ferry end of the walkway, which is about 300 metres in length, will be refurbished, subject to planning permission, as the last part of the project which started eight years ago.

Dundee City Council city development convener Councillor Will Dawson has met with Sustrans project officer Katherine Soane to discuss the future for the popular walkway.

Councillor Dawson said: "People really enjoy walking and cycling on this route and we are grateful to Sustrans for approving our application for money to help maintain this facility into the future. Families, cyclists, dog walkers and many others make great use of this link on our green circular network and National Cycle route which helps to promote healthy activities. I am sure they will welcome this latest announcement."

Katherine Soane, Project Officer Sustrans said: "With all our cycling success in the Tour de France and the Olympics, more of us are looking to dust off our bikes and get pedalling. Safe routes, such as this safe and direct route from Broughty Ferry into the heart of Dundee, are crucial to allow more of us to feel safe getting from A-to-B on two wheels."
