A new non-denominational primary school is to be built in Halfway at a cost of £7.5m.

South Lanarkshire Council's Planning Committee has approved its construction on the site of a disused park pavilion.

A separate application was also approved to allow the relocation of a sports pitch and children's play equipment to a site further to the south east of the park.

The proposed school, which is yet to be named, is the first entirely new school to be created in South Lanarkshire.

It has been designed to serve the growing population in and around Halfway as well as homes currently in the catchment of Hallside Primary School.

In detail the new school will provide:

•seven classrooms

•central corridor

•gym hall

•dining room

•stage

•staff facilities

•library and IT suite

•21-space car park

•multi-use sports pitch



The new school will occupy just 15% of the total open space in the park - the same as currently occupied by the old pavilion, play park and sports pitch.



Councillor Hugh Dunsmuir, Chair of the Planning Committee welcomed the news, saying "A lot of work has been done through the Planning and Education teams to ensure that the needs of the many families with children in this area are catered for. It is always great news to see a new school being built and this is no exception."

A name is due to be picked soon with the help of the interim Parent Council.
