Fears a row of buildings could collapse have led to the closure of a busy Glasgow street while demolition is planned.

The westbound side of George Street was closed last night between High Street and Shuttle Street after a row of shops at the junction with High Street were found to be unsafe.

City council building control bosses sealed the area off and ordered the demolition of the block.

Last night council bosses said it was at this stage unclear how long demolition works would last but a spokesman added: "The road has been closed for safety reasons and is likely to remain closed until demolition works are complete."

Diversions are in place.

The row that has been deemed to be dangerous includes a takeaway restaurant and two empty shop units.
