Landslide-Hit Stromeferry Road To Be Upgraded

Highland Council has revealed options for upgrading the landslide-plagued Stromeferry bypass.

Proposals will be discussed at a public consultation meeting this evening (Monday June 25) at 7pm.

The A890 road closed from December 22 2011 to April 23 this year after the latest landslide there cost the council £2.8m to deal with.

Ferries were laid on between Lochcarron and Stromeferry and an early morning school train between Strathcarron and Kyle was organised by Scotrail to take pupils from Applecross, Kishorn and Lochcarron to Plockton High School.

Between March and April, the railway line was covered in rubber mats to allow cars to use it as a road.

Council workers have now released details of the cost of each of the proposed long-term solutions for the troubled stretch of road.

The most expensive option (£115m) would be to dump rock in Loch Carron, extending land for an extra road beside the railway.

The cheapest thing to do would be to carry out repairs when required, at an estimated £10m for the next 20 years.

Building a 2km tunnel would carry a price tag of £94m, a bridge would cost £60m, and widening the road by cutting in to the hillside would cost £109m.

Other options include stabilising the existing rock face (£69m), providing a bypass via Glen Udalain (£23m) and extending the avalanche shelter (up to £104m)

In a statement, the council said it hoped tonight's meeting would "establish the views of the local community" before the process moved on to the options appraisal stage.
