An Argyll village is to get its first affordable homes for a generation.

The construction project in Dalmally was announced by the new leader of Argyll and Bute council.

Roddy McCuish said it was "great news for families" and should be rolled out across other rural villages.

In his first official engagement as council leader, Mr McCuish joined some pupils to plant a commemorative tree.

The council has contributed financially to the construction of eight houses in Scott Terrace, next to the village primary school.

A £1,088,197 contract has been awarded to Lochgilphead firm M&K MacLeod for the development, which will form part of the Argyll Communty Housing Association.

Chief Executive Alastair MacGregor said: "This will ultimately support the local school with families with children and it shows the importance of affordable housing in our rural villages throughout Argyll. I would really like to thank the Scottish Government and Argyll and Bute Council for their financial support for this project, which has ensured it will go ahead. It would not have happened unless we had all brought our resources together."

The houses, the first affordable homes built in Dalmally since 1980, are scheduled to be completed in May 2013.
