A £3 million town centre improvement project has started in Wishaw.

The streetscape project along Main Street, will create a more attractive place for shoppers, residents, local businesses and visitors.

The creation of a more pedestrian friendly town centre is one of the key aims of the improvement scheme by creating an environment with:

• Less and slower traffic

• More efficient public transport

• Wider footways and quality street furniture, including new seating and lighting.

The council shall be using high quality materials such as sandstone, granite and stainless steel in order to provide a contemporary look and feel to the Main Street whilst also complimenting the original visual features of the area.

Although the road will be reduced in width to two lanes, traffic will still be able to move in both directions along Main Street. The works will also include changes to the shape of the existing road and pedestrian footpaths, this is to remove the level changes and barriers that currently exist today.

In completing the new Kitchener Street road link, traffic now has a route through the town centre that avoids the Main Street. In addition, car parks have been improved and back court areas transformed to offer additional parking and rear serving areas. Combined, this will make Main Street a more relaxed and less congested shopping area for pedestrians.
