Energy Saving Measure Is Child’s Play For Borders School

Scottish Borders Council recently specified Licensed Icynene contractor Eco Insulate Ltd to carry out insulation work in the roof space of St Boswell’s Primary School near Melrose. Icynene LD-C-50 classic foam was sprayed directly onto the underside of roofing felt and roof sarking in 3 different areas and was chosen following research into the suitability of the material which is a water blown, chemically inert spray foam.

Bryan Woods, MD of eco Insulate Ltd said: "The REACH accreditation held by Icynene confirmed its suitability for this type of project as it specifically refers to chemicals and their safe use which of course is paramount in this type of work. As Icynene does not give off any formaldehyde or ‘off-gas’ over time it can be used with confidence."

The contract was successfully completed in less than 4 days and followed detailed planning by the School, Scottish Borders Council’s Architects Section and eco Insulate Ltd to ensure the safety of the pupils and minimise any disruption to the school day. Work was carried out in accordance with strict requirements regarding vehicle movements and in some areas spraying was carried out after normal school hours. The pre contract planning was invaluable in ensuring that the contract ran smoothly and this was acknowledged by Ray Cherry, Assistant Architectural Manager who thanked everyone for the work done and turnaround time for starting on site. John Burton, Depute Headteacher of St Boswells Primary school expressed his appreciation in the care and attention taken by eco Insulate staff and that there was no disruption to the routine.

This contract followed an earlier insulation project completed by eco Insulate ltd for Scottish Borders Council on behalf of The Hawick Common Good Fund where a traditional stone building in Hawick was completely refurbished. Work entailed applying Icynene foam to the underside of the roof sarking from eaves to ridge level with the air barrier properties of the material helping to control moisture movement within the building.

From their base in Dumfries and Galloway, eco Insulate Ltd operate throughout Mainland Scotland, The Western Isles, Orkney, Shetland, Tyne and Wear, North and South Yorkshire and Wales. A Thermal Image Service is also available through its associated company Thermal Image Surveys Ltd.
