Shoe Zone and BAM Construction received awards at the Midlothian Employment Action Network (MEAN) Conference 2012 recognising their work in supporting employment in local communities.
The MEAN Conference 2012, which took place yesterday in Loanhead, focused on employability in Midlothian and partnership working.
MEAN, which is coordinated by Midlothian Council, helps to improve the chances for people to get a job and brings together different organisations in Midlothian.
Kirsten Raynor, from Shoe Zone, Dalkeith accepted an award on behalf of Helen Smith, Shoe Zone Manager, for their support to Jobcentre Plus work experience programme. This award was presented by Ken Bramham, East and South East Scotland Integrated Operations Manager of Jobcentre Plus who congratulated Shoe Zone on their commitment to the programme which has offered 10 young people work experience with 6 now in employment.
BAM Construction received an award for providing local opportunities for employment, training and sub contractors on the Lasswade Community Campus project. The award was presented to Ken Irving, Regional Director by Margot Crosbie, Manager of Midlothian, East Lothian and Borders, Skills Development Scotland.
Kirsten Rayner, Shoe Zone Supervisor, who picked up the award on behalf of Helen Smith Shoe Zone Manager, said: "We are happy to provide this service and proud to have progressed some of our work experience placements into permanent staff in local stores. This proves that work experience can be highly rewarding by leading to a permanent position. We’re very pleased that Shoe Zone’s work in this area has been recognised through this MEAN award.
Ken Irving Regional Director from BAM said: "This award is particularly pleasing as it recognises that BAM is working hard to leave a legacy of improved education and better employment prospects for the benefit of local people in Midlothian."
June Paton, Chair of MEAN and Jobcentre Plus Employer and Partnership Manager said Jobcentre Plus were honoured to attend the MEAN conference and commended the winners for their positive support and for the employment opportunities they have given to the local community.
