A government decision to keep the responsibility for ensuring buildings are constructed to standard has been welcomed by Dundee City Council.

Will Dawson, convener of Dundee City Council's city development committee said: "Local authorities' building standards teams are best placed to help make sure that local communities are healthy and safe, as well influencing wider issues such as ensuring that new buildings are constructed in a way that considers issues like sustainability and climate change.

"The Scottish Government’s decision to keep the verification of building work in the hands of local authorities is a sound one that I welcome."

Local council building standards staff will continue to be the only government appointed verifier for new homes and buildings in Scotland.

It is their job to protect the public by independently checking building designs and how buildings are constructed to make sure the relevant standards set out in the building regulations are met.

A public consultation earlier this year raised the idea of introducing the private sector on a limited basis to verify building standards, but nearly three quarters of respondents to the survey were not in favour of change.
