The latest investment by Angus Council in its ongoing campaign to keep the county moving during severe weather has been unveiled.

A new £320,000 storage facility at Kirriemuir Road in Forfar will help the council manage its salt stocks more effectively.

Keeping the rock salt under cover will prevent it being exposed to rain, reducing waste through dilution and potential harm to the environment.

Visiting the new store, which has a capacity of 6000 tonnes, Councillor David Fairweather, the council's depute spokesman on roads issues said: "The new store will enable us to manage our stocks, saving money by preventing waste, while also protecting the environment.

"This is the latest step by the council to keep the county moving during severe weather, and comes on top of our decision to increase this year's winter maintenance budget by £400,000, bringing it to nearly £2.5m."

Councillor Fairweather urged local people to play their part in being prepared for severe weather:

"The council and its partners plan ahead to protect services in the county during winter weather, but in extreme conditions such as those experienced last year, everyday life can be disrupted," he added.

"However, we can all minimise the impact by planning ahead and taking some basic steps to be prepared at home, at work and while travelling."
