The joint application by Midlothian and City of Edinburgh Councils to build a new waste treatment facility at Millerhill, near Edinburgh, was approved in principle by Midlothian Council.

The plant - which will operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week - will recycle municipal waste, primarily from Midlothian and City of Edinburgh Councils.

The proposed development will:

• Contribute substantially to meeting waste-reduction targets as set out in the Zero Waste Plan
• Accords with the Edinburgh and Lothians Structure Plan and the Midlothian Local Plan
• Accords with the EU Waste Framework Directive
