The First Minister Alex Salmond today opened Heriot-Watt University's new campus in the Arabian Gulf and told students: "You have access to the best tools needed to bring the world out of recession."

Speaking to students, staff and dignitaries in the surroundings of the new Campus, the First Minister said: "This world-class campus will quite rightly help establish the high quality reputation of Heriot-Watt University in the United Arab Emirates and will pave the way for the university's expansion in the region and further afield. Even more than that, it will showcase the advantages of gaining an education in a Scottish university.

Heriot-Watt University was the first overseas university to set up in Dubai International Academic City, offering a top quality standard of education to students and executives from the Gulf and further afield.

"The high-quality Scottish education available at Heriot-Watt's Dubai campus will provide thousands of students with the skills to become future leaders, managers and innovators to create a stronger business world."

The £35 million (AED 200m) purpose-built, modern campus - which has trebled the University's original capacity of 1,500 students and will allow it to expand the range of its courses - is based in the Dubai International Academic City, approximately 25 minutes from the centre of Dubai.
