An application has been submitted to create an onshore connection for a subsea electricity cable linking Scotland and Norway.
A landing point at Peterhead has been suggested as part of the proposed new North Sea interconnector.
Project company NorthConnect, whose directive is to plan, build and operate an HVDC interconnector between Norway and the UK, has submitted an application to National Grid Transmission.
A subsidiary of Scottish and Southern Energy, SSE Interconnector, is involved in the development company, as is leading Energy company Vattenfall.
According to NorthConnect the move marks a "further milestone" in the progress of developing the interconnector.
First Minister Alex Salmond described an integrated grid as "essential" to Europe's sustainable energy policy.
