Next Step At Waterfront

The next step in the multi-million pound transformation of Dundee's waterfront could get the green light next week.

Councillors on the Recess Sub-Committee will be asked to approve a £11.345 million tender for a three year contract for the removal and replacement of the Tay Road Bridge Northern Ramp and the construction of the new Northern Boulevard.

The lowest tender for the latest phase of construction work has come from Sir Robert McAlpine Limited. This figure of £11.345 million is well within the original budget allowance of £14 million approved by the Waterfront Board.

Ken Guild, Leader of Dundee City Council and Chair of the Dundee Waterfront Board committee said: "Work on the Central Waterfront development is gathering momentum and we are making significant progress.

"We have seen the recent project stages coming in earlier than scheduled and they are also being delivered at a lower cost than we had budgeted for.

"With most of the development sites now having been cleared, the waterfront area is attracting significant interest and there is further investment to come."

Dundee Waterfront is a joint project between Dundee City Council and Scottish Enterprise.

Key components of the Central Waterfront Masterplan include: extending the city centre down to the waterfront; the creation of a new grid-iron street pattern, based on historical routes; the creation of a pair of east/west tree lined boulevards to replace the

existing inner ring road; radical improvements to the rail station; a large-scale flood prevention scheme; a major new civic space, stretching from the Caird Hall to the Tay; construction of the £45 million V&A Dundee on a prime waterfront site.
