Orkney Islands Council exchanged formal contracts on Friday with Morrison Construction, part of the Galliford Try group, for construction of the £58m Schools Investment Programme.

The project, which is being supported with funding from the Scottish Government and advice from the Scottish Futures Trust, will see a new Grammar School, Arts Theatre and halls of residence in Kirkwall, a new Primary School in Stromness, and Leisure Pool and Squash Courts at the Pickaquoy Centre, and new all weather pitches in Stromness and Kirkwall.

The lead designer on the project is Keppie Design Ltd.

Convener of Orkney Islands Council, Stephen Hagan, said: “I would like to thank the Scottish Government and the Scottish Futures trust for their support, and congratulate staff and elected members across the Council who have worked hard to bring the project to this milestone on behalf of the community.

“As a Council we look forward to seeing the new schools, arts centres and sports facilities take shape over coming months and to seeing them serve our community for many years to come.”
