Scotland's first Social Housing Charter has moved a step closer, Housing and Communities Minister Alex Neil announced on Monday.

A discussion paper has been published summarising responses from a series of summer road shows. It also provides suggestions on how to develop the Charter further.

The Social Housing Charter will define what social landlords should be doing for the customers they serve: their tenants; homeless people; and others who use their housing services.

Comments on the discussion paper are requested by 16 May. The Scottish Government is planning to publish a draft Charter in the summer for formal consultation.

Alex Neil said: "I want everyone to receive a high quality housing service. The Charter will set out what all landlords in the social rented sector should be achieving for their tenants.

"It is crucial everyone plays a part in shaping this important document.

"I hope that landlords, individual tenants, tenant groups and other stakeholders will take this opportunity to hold local debates about what social landlords should be achieving for their customers.

"I want to hear their thoughts to help shape the final Charter, which should come into force next year."
