Alba Structural Systems has been called in to offer expert advice on the new North Glasgow College.
The award winning building was designed by the same team that designed the Scottish parliament building.
The college has some large open areas with atrium spaces but there was need for more teaching areas. The new machine tool training room pictured had lots of available headroom above but no way to access the area even if a mezzanine floor was constructed above. Alba Structural Systems were called in to offer advice, they discovered that the fire corridor which provided access to the machine room area at ground floor also had a high ceiling. This enabled them to construct a fire corridor on the upper level which connected to existing first floor level of the college.
The project therefore involved a 250m² Q-Dek mezzanine floor, and mezzanine platform to form upper corridor. They formed new fire doors at upper level to provide access. The mezzanine floor also required to be one hour fire rated above and below and our scope of works also included all of the lighting & emergency lighting. All this work was carried out during a week’s holiday in October and the Q-Dek mezzanine floor was designed so that all support columns were not interfering with the machines. Alba Structural Systems provided a cost effective solution showcasing how you can get the most use out of available headroom.
