Laundry Cleans Up

The former NorDan premises in Great Western Road has reopened as Prestige The Laundry after a £50,000 plus refurbishment.

Businessman Syd Birnie and husband and wife Marilyn and George Wallen have transformed the 1,076 square feet unit into a state of the art laundry using hypoallergenic detergents and going beyond compliance with all environmental requirements.

Prestige The Laundry created one full-time post, filled by Marilyn as manager, and two part time positions. Betty Constable and Madge Ogg have a combined total for 45 years experience in the industry.

“I did a bit of research into the need for a top-class laundry service and was sure it would be a success, given the number of transient people in Aberdeen who would use the service,” Marilyn said. Her London-based family have experience in the laundry trade so she tapped into that before selecting market-leading equipment.

“We designed the layout so customers can see the machines working and the clean clothes hanging up. We wanted them to know it is a professional business with nothing to hide.”

Since it opened in November, Prestige The Laundry has secured one contract for collecting, laundering, ironing and returning sheets, duvets and pillowcases from boats coming into the harbour regularly and is looking at the possibility of setting up a pick-up service from workplaces.
