Following the publication of two key housing indicators today, home builders have repeated their call for Scottish political support to increase the flow of mortgage finance.

This comes the day after industry body Homes for Scotland launched its manifesto to MSPs at the Scottish Parliament.

Responding to the latest Scottish Government housing statistics showing a 20% reduction in the total number of new homes built over the last four quarters (compared with the same period the previous year) and the Council of Mortgage Lenders reporting that the mortgage market in Scotland will remain constrained for some time, the organisation’s Chief Executive Jonathan Fair said: “Today’s figures reinforce the seriousness of the position facing Scotland’s housing sector. Scotland must help itself to avoid a worsening housing crisis.

“If our politicians take the lead to facilitate 10% annual growth in private new homes over the lifetime of the next Scottish Parliament, we could deliver 46,000 much needed new homes and create 38,000 new jobs whilst improving housing access across the board and making a real impact on climate change targets.”
