Brian Minns (18) is overjoyed that an easing of the recession has led to him securing a sought after apprenticeship as a roofer with Harrison Duff Ltd.
Brian joined Fife Council’s Get Ready for Work programme to learn construction techniques at the Skills Development Centre in Kirkcaldy.
Through the centre, operated by Fife Council Development Services, Brian gained certificates in CSCS, Manual Handling, PASMA, Working at Heights and Abrasive Wheels. He was then sent on a placement with Fife Council Building Services working with the roofers to learn valuable skills and gain experience before landing the apprenticeship with Harrison Duff.
Mr Jack Harrison of Harrison Duff said: “Brian is pleasant, punctual and very keen to learn all aspects of the trade. He is a willing worker and more importantly works well in a team.”
“I’m glad I had the chance to try Get Ready for Work,” said Brian. “It’s helped me to make up my mind that this is what I want to do. It’s great because you get real work experience and certificates that help you to get a job. Other people should try it.”
Get Ready for Work is designed to help youngsters aged 16 – 19 to find a suitable job or training place by giving them support and work placement experience to help them to realise their strengths and get on the right path to a successful career.
