The Highland Council's Planning and Development Service has launched a protocol for dealing with planning applications for people with disabilities.

This protocol aims to ensure the fast and efficient handling of applications for planning permission which solely relate to works to improve a disabled person's access to a public building, or to improve the access, safety, health or comfort of a person with a disability at their home.

In addition, customers with disabilities who are applying for adaptations to their homes will be offered as much practical help as possible in the completion of forms and assembly of supporting information.

Councillor Ian Ross, Chairman of the Planning, Environment and Development Committee said: "The new protocol reflects the service’s focus on continuous improvement which was also reflected in our recent Building Standards audit by the Scottish Government. By prioritising planning applications for people with disabilities we are showing that we are committed to enhancing the quality of service for this group in the Highland Council area.

"We are committed to taking a socially inclusive approach to the delivery of the Planning Service across the Highland."
