Midlothian Council has given the go-ahead for a development at Straiton Retail Park.

Permission was granted for applicants to progress with the development of either a department store or three retail units together with a low level multi-storey car park at the north corner of Straiton Retail Park.

The new development will require the demolition of existing buildings at land to the North of the Peel Centre, Straiton Road, Loanhead.


Councillor Russell Imrie, Chair of Midlothian Council Planning Committee, said: “This development will form a key gateway into Midlothian through the Straiton area. It is an exciting development for Midlothian in terms of design, retail opportunity and local employment. We look forward to working with the applicants as this project progresses."

In his report to the planning committee Ian Johnson, Midlothian Council Head of Planning and Development, said: “The proposed development is located within an area identified in the Midlothian Local Plan as appropriate for retail uses subject to certain criteria in the development plan being met; the development’s form, design and sitting is acceptable and will enhance the built up area whilst preserving existing amenity and local biodiversity.”
