Residents from Cumbernauld are set for a bright new future as work on a proposed affordable housing development in Kildrum reached a significant milestone this month.
Cumbernauld Housing, a member of leading UK housing provider Sanctuary Group, in partnership with North Lanarkshire Council and the Scottish Government, has demolished seven structurally defective blocks of flats on Ainslie and Maclehose Road.
The 108 flats were acquired by North Lanarkshire Council under a Compulsory Purchase Order and allowed previous owners to purchase new properties under the Scottish Government’s LIFT (shared equity) scheme.
Demolition of the blocks is the second phase of Cumbernauld’s regeneration plans for the Kildrum area and it is proposed the site will provide new-build affordable accommodation for local residents.
Peter Martin, Director of Cumbernauld Housing, said: "We are delighted to complete the demolition of this site and we would like to thank the local residents for their patience whilst this work has been carried out.
“We’d also like to thank the Council and Scottish Government for their support of this project which will allow the continued regeneration of this area, and we look forward to developing new homes on the site sometime in the near future.”
Councillor Jim McCabe, Leader of North Lanarkshire Council, added: “Demolition of people’s homes is always a difficult decision but in this case it was necessary because of structural defects in the flats. This has been a challenging project for everyone involved but I am pleased to mark such an important milestone in these works."
