The new Stena Line ferry terminal construction site was evacuated yesterday following the discovery of World War II explosive shells.
Police were forced to close the A77 road which links Glasgow to Stranraer for several hours after excavation works on the Stena Line facility at Cairnryan unearthed a large number of shells.
Chief Insp David McCallum said: "Initial suggestions are they are 25lb [11kg] World War II ordnance.
"But the army are going through checks with their databases to establish the exact nature of them."
Stena Line are investing £200m in the transfer of the ferry terminal from Stranraer to Cairnryan.
