Inverclyde Council's Policy and Resources Committee has agreed to pump an extra £200,000 into emergency pothole and pavement repairs.

The money will allow roads teams to act now to tackle damage caused by the exceptionally cold winter weather over the past couple of months.

Council Leader Councillor Stephen McCabe said: "It is vital that we act quickly because quite simply we cannot allow the situation to get out of hand. This is a significant sum which will allow our teams to do all they can to minimise what potentially could be a major issue for drivers and pedestrians in Inverclyde."

The money will come from the Council’s Insurance Fund and will be spent before the end of March.

Convener of the Safe Sustainable Communities Committee Councillor Robert Moran said: "I am delighted we have been able to find such a significant sum to allow us to take action now. Our roads teams did a brilliant job over the Christmas and New Year period and this investment will allow them to start putting right some of the damage caused by the snow and freezing temperatures.

"I am also looking forward to seeing the findings of our Winter Maintenance Review when they are published."
