A brand new school for children with additional learning needs has opened in Edinburgh.

The purpose built school which sits on the Longstone Primary campus will provide educational opportunities for around 64 pupils of primary school age with moderate learning difficulties.

Staff including speech and language therapists, occupational therapists and educational psychologists made suggestions for the design of the building.

The new light and airy building has quiet rooms and a specially-designed soft play and sensory room.

The Council's policy is to provide education for pupils with special needs in both mainstream and special schools and where appropriate, new schools are build alongside mainstream schools to allow integration between the two schools.

In a similar project Braidburn Special School sits on the same campus along with Oxgangs Primary School and Firrhill Secondary School.

It is hoped that Redhall will allow for further integration between pupils.

Councillor Marilyne MacLaren, Education Leader, said: "We are leading the way in special school provision and I am delighted to see another school open.

"Integration is an important part of education, allowing all pupils to benefit from working together, respect and understand each other. I hope all pupils and staff both old and new will enjoy their time at Redhall."
