A total of 26 new council houses are to be built in Winton Avenue, Kilwinning.

Erected on the site of the former St Michael's Academy, the new development will be the second council house new-build project in North Ayrshire within the past two years.

The announcement follows a successful bid for £650,000 from the Scottish Government. |

Councillor Tom Barr, Executive Member for the Environment, welcomed the announcement.


He said: "This is excellent news – both for the Council and the residents of North Ayrshire.

"We hope this will pave the way for future Council house building developments and assist us in addressing the shortage of affordable housing in the area."

He added that consultation would be a key part of the project.

"We believe public input is important and that's why we plan to host at least three consultation workshops within the next 12 months," he said. "Individuals will be encouraged to let their views be known when it comes to issues such as the location of footpaths, landscaping, parking and the design of the homes themselves."

Work on the new site is to begin in October 2010 and continue through to September 2011.
