Approval Due For £400m Power Line

The Scottish Government is set to approve controversial plans for the £400m Beauly to Denny power line.

Ministers are due to outline conditions for the scheme which would see a line of 600 giant pylons spanning the Highlands to central Scotland carrying electricity generated by renewable power projects to the national grid.

The 200ft pylons, carrying in total 400,000 volts , would be placed from Beauly, west of Inverness, to Denny, near Falkirk.

The 137-mile project, due to replace the existing 132kV line, has been the subject of a public inquiry and received more than 18,000 objections.

Environmentalists have questioned the impact the Scottish Hydro-Electric Transmission Ltd (SHETL) and SP Transmission Ltd (SPT) scheme, which passes through the Cairngorms National Park, would have on the landscape.

While green energy advocates say the power line is needed to help meet renewable energy commitments.

Ministers will outline their decision in a statement to the Scottish Parliament.
