Regeneration Boosts Renfrewshire

Plans to regenerate the centres of Johnstone and Elderslie have been given a major boost.

Renfrewshire councillors have backed a proposal to appoint consultants to help develop a strategy for the regeneration of the centres over the next decade.

The study has been commissioned by Renfrewshire Council as part of its £92 million investment programme for leisure, school, community facilities and town centre regeneration.

"We've always made clear that the regeneration of the centres of Johnstone and Elderslie is a key element of our community investment programme," said Councillor Iain Nicolson, Convener of Renfrewshire Council's Planning and Economic Development Policy Board.

"Our intention with this study is to gather the views of residents, businesses and community organisations on practical and sustainable proposals for the future of Johnstone and Elderslie.

"Alongside the £6.3million investment planned for a community sports hub at Johnstone High, we have always said that the replacement of existing pools in Johnstone and Elderslie be accompanied by proposals to build on existing efforts to regenerate the centre of both communities."

The £59,400 study will be led by Kilmacolm based firm Douglas Wheeler Associates. It will consider and consult on a range of economic, social and environmental issues in each community.

A 20 week public consultation programme will begin early in 2010. It's expected that Renfrewshire Council will prepare a masterplan and development strategy for the centres of Johnstone and Elderslie later in 2010.

"This year has already seen significant investment made or secured particularly for Johnstone," added Councillor Nicolson. "There was the £775,000 secured from the Scottish government's Town Centres Fund for Johnstone and other communities, and £20,000 on new Christmas lights for the town.

"Our aim now is to gather views and develop proposals which will enhance Johnstone and Elderslie's prospects for the future."
