'Green Light' For HMP Low Moss

A new custodial facility in East Dunbartonshire, HMP Low Moss, has been given the go ahead by East Dunbartonshire Council's Planning Committee.

The facility is being delivered by one of the leading contractors Carillion with Holmes acting as Architect and Lead Consultant.

Low Moss is the first completely new prison to be built and operated by the Scottish Prison Service in Scotland in decades and represents a step-change in contemporary custodial design.

The new facility sets the standard for the further three new prisons to be built under the Scottish Government's prison modernisation programme.

HMP Low Moss will be built on the site of the former prison of the same name which closed in 2007.

The new prison will provide 700 cells and is expected to open in 2012. The design and construction works will cost around £116m.

The former prison has already been demolished and the site prepared for construction. Road improvements have also been undertaken in advance of the main works in order to facilitate the new development.
