Strathclyde Partnership for Transport's Chair, Alistair Watson, recently visited the newly-created site compound in Greenock's Kilblain Street to signal the start of the work on the £1.3million new bus station.

Kilblain Street is currently closed to buses as work on the bus station's new layout starts. Bus services are now operating from nearby Nicolson Street and Inverkip Street.

Luddon Construction Ltd won the £678,000 contract last month as part of the upgrade plan. This preparatory work will secure the base for of the new bus station and will take 20 weeks to complete.

Part of the site contains old cellars from demolished tenements. These are to be uncovered and back filled before construction work on the new layout can begin.

The redeveloped bus station will have eight bus stances, new shelters, improved waiting areas and CCTV cameras throughout. State-of-the art passenger information screens will give passengers real time information about bus departures and arrivals.

Councillor Watson was impressed with the scale of the work underway. He said: "SPT's investment in this facility reinforces our commitment to supporting the Inverclyde area, particularly now when money is so tight."
