Angus Council has awarded the contract to dredge the Barry burn, Carnoustie to Highland Quality Construction.

Work is expected to begin in the next fortnight, and will take approximately five weeks to complete, subject to weather conditions.

The work will involve the removal and disposal of sediment which has built up in the burn over a period of time. The area of the burn to be dredged runs from upstream of MacDonald Smith Drive to the railway culvert.

Convener of Infrastructure Services, Councillor David May said: "I welcome the awarding of the contract to dredge the burn, which will improve the water flow.

"We previously wrote to local residents on the subject of recent flooding in the Barry burn area and we are now notifying them that the work is set to start. The council, through its roads division, is continuing to consider other steps which it might take to ensure the effective functioning of the Barry burn formal flood prevention scheme into the future.

"We plan to write to local residents periodically to update them on developments."
