Borders Railway Announcement Welcomed

Scottish Borders Council has welcomed the announcement by Finance Secretary John Swinney that the procurement process to appoint a contractor to take forward construction of the Borders Railway will be started before the end of the year.

Council Leader David Parker said: "This is excellent news for the Borders. The Borders Railway is key to the future economic growth of the area so I am delighted to hear that the project is absolutely on track. I am sure the majority of Borderers will warmly welcome this announcement."

Executive Member for Planning and Environment, Carolyn Riddell-Carre, said: "It is well known that a strong infrastructure is essential for the Borders to continue to grow and prosper. The railway will provide an essential link from the Borders to Edinburgh and beyond. I hope that this step means that the line will become a reality. If so, it is fantastic news."

Scottish Borders council believes that the Borders railway is an essential resource for the future of the area.
