Angus Council's Education Committee is to be asked to authorise a consultation with the Brechin community on plans to improve the burgh's high school.

This follows an announcement by the Scottish government that funding is to be made available towards the cost of an upgraded school - estimated to be in the region of £30m.

At the meeting on Wednesday 21 October, members will also be asked to approve in principle council investment in the high school.

In a report to the committee, a number of options are set out which will form the basis of consultation with parents, staff and the wider Brechin community.

The consultation exercise would engage stakeholders in the process of determining the preferred option.

Education convener Peter Nield said: "The council has recognised for some time that investment was needed to improve facilities at Brechin High.

"The news that Brechin was one of a small number of secondary schools in the country to have been earmarked for funding by the government is welcome and I hope the committee will accept the recommendations of the report which will allow us to embark on a dialogue with the local community on its needs and aspirations for an improved school."
