Focus on Parking Garages
Parking Garages and Carbon Monoxide Gas Detectors
Parking garages, Ambulance Stations, Parcel Depots, Maintenance Bays, and other areas that will have vehicles running in an enclosed space must be ventilated to prevent the build-up of carbon monoxide and other dangerous gases (eg; nitrogen dioxide) from vehicle exhaust fumes.
In the past these areas had been fitted with very large ventilation fans that would run 24 hours a day.
Over the past 20 years, we have begun to focus heavily on energy efficiency, and the electricity that is needed to run these big fans at all times is costly and wasteful.
To combat this excess energy usage the industry has developed an alternate strategy to ventilate these enclosed spaces. This involves actually measuring the amount of Carbon Monoxide (CO) or Nitrogen Dioaxide (NO2) in the garage, and only operating the fan at full speed when it is actually necessary.
Building owners can see energy savings of 80-90% when these systems are operated as such.
How do parking garage sensors function?
These sensors operate by electro-chemical reaction. That is, when the sensor is contacted by Carbon Monoxide (CO) or Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2) a change in voltage happens which triggers the fan to activate. As the sensor is contacted by gas over months or years, these chemicals begin to wear out and they no longer trigger the fan at the proper concentration of hazardous gases. For that reason, the manufacturers require that the sensors be calibrated every 6-12 months and replaced every 2-7 years. If this doesn’t happen, then we can either create a safety issue due to gas build up (and therefore a real possibility of people being exposed to high levels of gas), or lose out on energy saving by having the fan read a fault and always operate.
In the field, we are finding that 90+% of the sensors that were installed have never been calibrated, and 50-75% have completely failed and are no longer working at all.
On top of this EH40/2005 (Third Edition) published 2018, guidance has reduced the trigger levels to 30ppm for carbon monoxide whereas older systems had a trigger level of 50ppm.
In our experience, the first thing that HSE will look for in the case of an incident is whether the gas detection system has been maintained and if so where is the paperwork to back it up – they do not accept the excuse that you were not aware of the requirements for testing – the liability is on you.
How are toxic gas detectors calibrated?
Getting these systems up and running again is a fairly inexpensive and painless process. Our technicians will visit the site and assess the quantity, brand, and location of each Carbon Monoxide or Nitrogen Dioxide sensor. They will apply the proper span gases and run through the manufacturer’s calibration procedures. Sensors that pass calibration will have a certificate generated and calibration label affixed. The client is then provided with a calibration report and ongoing operations and maintenance plan for this system
Sensors that do not pass calibration, are expired, or otherwise damaged can easily by replaced with the same brand or upgraded to a modern version. Our field technicians will recommend the most durable and cost-effective solution to the facilities manager.

S4S Gaswarden GR
The latest addition to our S4S Gaswarden family is the S4S Gaswarden GR. The unit is a stand alone sensor which is supplied with a 230VAC mains adapter meaning that you can just plug it in and it is ready to use. The unit comes with a bright colour changing 30mm LED (Green for healthy, Red for gas) and a built in mutable sounder. The unit also has a test function to ensure confidence for the end user.

We were recently called to Repton Sports Centre in Derbyshire to quote for a replacement gas detection system - to replace an obsolete system that the manufacturer was wanting over £1000.00 just to turn up and look at!
We supplied, installed and commissioned one of our S4S Guardian 1 control systems complete with our Guardian Point Chlorine (CL2) gas sensor.
Two weeks after being installed there was a major incident where Chlorine gas was released causing several people to be treated for the effects of Chlorine.

S4S Guardian Plus - The most versatile gas detection system
On a recent install of our S4S Guardian addressable gas detection system the spec for the job changed several times. With a conventional system this would have been a major problem, but with the advanced design of the S4S Guardian addressable system the changes required were very simple to administer.
The system: 15pt Natural Gas system for a large Hotel covering areas where the gas pipe runs through various rooms in to kitchens.
The install required over 200 metres of cable - a conventional gas detection system would have been nearer to 1000 metres.
The spec changed part way through the install where it was decided that each area required its own beacon if gas is detected in that area. We were able to utilise the sensor network to install addressable relays to indicate when sensors in a particular area where triggered. Again this saved 100's of metres of extra cable and all the man hours required to install.

The GUARDIAN LITE addressable system is designed to be used in conjunction with BMS control panels and Fire Alarm control panels but can also be used as a standalone system. The system is designed to be used in all applications including Zone 1 and Zone 2 areas. With various options the Guardian Lite can be used as an addressable network of up to 64 sensors for flammable, toxic and asphyxiant gases. Additional panels can be added at various locations to enable real time readings prior to entry in to the area. It has been another busy week for the sales and service teams at Sensors for Safety Ltd.
The week started with confirmation of some large system orders for a national courier company to monitor Carbon Monoxide (CO) and Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2) in their loading bays to control the exhaust emissions from their fleet of vehicles. Our low cost S4S Gaswarden gas detection system proved to be ideal for this application.
