QGIS for Environmentalists

Nevis Environmental, working with their partners Synergie Training delivered another highly successful QGIS course for Environmentalists during February 2020.

Delegates came from all over Scotland to attend the course which was organised by Synergie Training - one of the leading IT, Construction and Infrastructure Training Companies in the UK and delivered by Lucy Arnold, GIS & Data Manager for Nevis Environmental, an established environmental consultancy working throughout Britain, who themselves use QGIS extensively so have an excellent understanding of its application.

The two-day course covered a range of topics including:

Adding data and moving around the map

Working with layers; creating and displaying and digitising

Accessing free online data

Analysis and geoprocessing

Cartography and creating a professional output with print composer

“We provide the training suite facility and delegates and work with partners with a proven track record in both the subject and in its delivery, so Nevis fit the bill” explains Steven Nelson, Managing Director at Synergie Training. “The course was very well received by the delegates, judging by the feedback”, he continued.

So, what was it about the course that the delegates liked most?
“Structured, logical, demonstrated followed by exercises”

“Incorporated all the tools necessary and encouraged involvement and questions. Thank you very much” “Interactive training style. Making sure everyone was up to speed and interested”

“Knowledge of trainer and topics covered”
Lucy Arnold, Nevis’ GIS and Data Manager and the QGIS trainer, reiterated that delivering a quality well-structured course was the key, “It’s nice to know that the delegates got a lot out of the course. My aim is always to ensure everyone goes away more confident and enthusiastic to put their new skills into practice. Having delivered a number of QGIS courses over the years, it still gives me a great deal of satisfaction to see people develop their skills over the two days.”

Nevis retains ISO certification

Nevis is proud to announce that the company has successfully passed this year’s ISO audit and can retain the 9001:2015, 14001:2015 and 45001:2018 standards. The process of certification is undertaken to provide our clients with the satisfaction of knowing we are continuously working towards a safer, higher quality service.

Across all 3 standards Nevis were highly praised for their well managed systems and control of processes across projects, recruitment & HR and operations as well as clear demonstration of how H&S was treated with the highest priority both in the field and within the office.
The ISO 9001 standard focuses on the quality management principles including a strong customer and continuous improvement focus. Internal management systems within Nevis are essential to the gaining of this award and have revolutionising the way in which Nevis operates; helping to achieve high quality outputs.

ISO 14001 is an internationally agreed standard that sets out the requirements for an environmental management system. It will help Nevis improve environmental performance through more efficient use of resources and reduction of waste. Something we are very passionate about.

ISO 45001 is based on the occupational health and safety management system within Nevis and how staff are kept safe. This is exceedingly important to Nevis who values each and every member of the team and understands the dangers of working in remote areas.

Nevis Environmental signs MOU with ROAVR Unmanned Aviation Specialists

Nevis are delighted to announce the signing of a MOU with ROAVR Unmanned Aviation Specialists to bring specialist drone services to the environmental market.

Nevis Environmental have been leading the field in environmental management since 2004, providing survey services and specialist management of environmental issues across a project life cycle from its offices in the Highlands and North of England. Always looking to collaborate with innovative companies and industry leaders, they were delighted to sign a memorandum of understanding with ROAVR – an aerial data provider, to form a partnership to market the use of drones in environmental and ecological surveys and monitoring for a wide variety of clients.

It was perhaps even more fitting that this took place at the leading industry Drone & AUV expo held at The Enterprise Park in Moray in conjunction with ARPAS-UK & Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) on 8th November 2018.

As technology across industries continues to advance at a rapid rate, so do the opportunities for innovation and opportunity, and this is something Managing Director of Nevis, Dr Kathryn Fraser and Matt Harmsworth, Managing Director of ROAVR quickly realised.

Speaking of the partnership, Dr Fraser says: “our research within the renewables and development industry clearly show that drones for environmental surveying will become normalized in future. There is a significant need within our industry to have the ability to cover large, often inaccessible areas safely, quickly and economically and this is something the use of drones provides. Nevis already have an experienced environmental management team, as well as offering GIS and data services which, when combined with the expertise of ROAVR, will enable us to offer clients a full suite of surveying solutions.”

Matt Harmsworth went on to add: “I am delighted to be exploring the use of drones further with Nevis, ROAVR has a long history in this sector having initially set the company up to service this area. Data is king and this partnership will enable us to offer an even more robust suite of services to our clients.”

ROAVR UAS is a UK-based drone service company specialising in survey and inspection using manned and unmanned aircraft.

Nevis Environmental provides survey services and specialist management of environmental issues across a project life cycle from its offices in the Highlands and North of England.
