Whiteleaf House

A new 3-storey villa with a basement in the heart of the Grange in Edinburgh. The new contemporary white rendered villa, with contrasting planes of zinc, relates to a similar 1930s villa nearby and takes advantage of the south facing slope with the cricket ground to its fore and Blackford Hill beyond. The house, for a young family, is formed around social spaces articulated by this sunny view. A double height hall and reception room forms the heart of the plan with family spaces and circulation working off this. Bedrooms are on the upper levels culminating in a viewing room onto a large roof terrace at the top.

Malcolm Fraser Architects designed the house up to Planning stage with Lucy Miller as the project architect. Lucy has subsequently continued the detailed design as a partner in kalm architecture. Completed Summer 2011.

House 3

A large extension to double the size of an existing gardener's cottage within a farm curtilage in East Lothian.

The design shifts the axis of the cottage to improve its situation with the landscape, a new entrance is formed within the west gable to front onto the farm courtyard and all boundaries to the south and east are removed to provide an open relationship with the fields and woodland. This provides a sheltered south-facing aspect for the main living space.

The construction uses a cross-laminated solid timber panel that will be clad in stained timber and a polished concrete internal wall that is stone faced externally. A zinc roof will sit atop the 10m long hardwood clerestorey window.

The extension to this substantial stone villa seeks to open up the existing austere relationship between house and garden by creating a new light filled threshold space. The new family room orientates itself towards the sun and in doing so introduces a diagonal movement to the plan that offers an additional dynamic to the way the house is used. The timber and steel framed volume is clad in vertical stained weatherboarding with a zinc roof and the inside opens up to the garden through large glazed doors, picture windows and incorporates bespoke fixed timber furniture.
