Final Consultations For New Cumnock Project

The final consultation events regarding the future development of New Cumnock, East Ayrshire, are to be held next month.

New Cumnock was one of the first communities in East Ayrshire to produce a Community Led Action Plan, which outlines its plans for change. Part of the aim, which is shared by the Great Steward of Scotland's Dumfries House Trust (GSSDHT) and East Ayrshire Council, is to identify sustainable future facilities.

For example, in June 2014, the local authority agreed to sell New Cumnock Town Hall to GSSDHT, and the building, which is currently in a poor state of repair, will now be redeveloped and made suitable for community use. Elsewhere in the area, is a community square project which would see the current site of the library, games hall and community centre being redeveloped into a creative public space.

Detailed plans for the £3.2m initiative were unveiled at an event earlier this month, where Prince Charles, Duke of Rothesay, was in attendance. The Prince's Foundation for Building Community has been actively involved in the feasibility and design process of the community project.

In addition to the above, a new frontage and side entrance is proposed for New Cumnock's outdoor swimming pool. The pool itself will be transformed into a traditional style lido, with the new elevation giving the facility an enhanced status within the townscape. A new space has also been proposed in the front of the pool, to include car parking, landscaping and a community garden. A heritage centre and community café would also be delivered, while an adventure play park is proposed for the square.

Following the success of the consultation event, two more have been organised for next month. They will take place at New Cumnock Community Centre on Monday 2 February from 6.30pm to 8.30pm, and Thursday 5 February from 1.30pm to 3.30pm.

Councillor Douglas Reid, Leader of East Ayrshire Council, commented: "His Royal Highness is very involved in the plans for the future of New Cumnock, actively supporting the local community as they work towards the realisation of their vision. For His Royal Highness to take the time to chat through ideas with the local community was so generous. We are all extremely grateful to His Royal Highness for his continued commitment.

"Time and time again, this community has demonstrated that it is passionate about the future and is wholly committed to working with a range of partners and agencies to deliver their ambitious plans. This unique partnership between the Council, the community and the Great Steward of Scotland's Dumfries House Trust is guiding the future of New Cumnock."
