Edinburgh Napier Uni Submits Campus Plans

A planning application to carry out improvement work at Edinburgh Napier University campus has been submitted to the Council.

Submitted by Smith Scott Mullan Associates on behalf of the university, the proposals relate to the refurbishment of the primary elevation of the Colinton Road entrance to the campus.

In its design statement, the architectural firm has said the application is for the over-cladding and enhancement of the existing elevation to Colinton Road. The façade is the principle elevation to this section of street and forms the main entrance to the campus, and the refurbishment includes grey toned cladding to the main façade with coloured window head and reveals, as well as coloured cladding to the existing undercroft at the east

entrance. In addition, ground lighting to coloured glass partitions within the existing bicycle stores would be installed to create glowing boxes as another feature of the elevation. This would bring additional safety and practicality to these areas, but also further upgrades the lighting to the street edge of the campus.

It added that the proposal "aims to enhance the elevation through the subtle use of colour and create a more positive aesthetic effect to the streetscape for students, the passer-by and motorist.

"Attention to the lighting at street level and at upper levels is predominant in the design, in order to enhance the environment as a whole as you move along the street."
