Queen Street Station Designs Updated

Construction News Image
New images of a planned refurbishment of Glasgow's Queen Street Station have been unveiled by Network Rail.

The £104m revamp is being carried out to help meet predicted growth at the station as well as to accommodate for longer trains.

Following the completion of the first phase of the consultation, a number of changes were made to the original design. Among the amendments, were moving the main access ramp inside the station, widening the entrance stairs and improving disabled access.

Now, as part of its second phase of public consultations, the operator has released a "flythrough video".

Work on the ambitious project is scheduled to commence next year, with a scheduled completion date of 2019. It will see significant new developments made at the station itself, as well as the surrounding areas, such as an extensive of the east side of the building and into the Buchanan Galleries shopping centre. The entrance to the station is also set to be replaced with a 500 sq m glass facade.

Commenting on the project, Transport Minister Keith Brown said: "Queen Street is one of Scotland's most important stations. This consultation is informing plans which will transform the station into a 21st century transport hub.

"It will be an inviting and enjoyable place for people to begin or end their journey on some of Scotland's busiest rail routes, including the improved Glasgow-Edinburgh via Falkirk line through the EGIP scheme, which will result in 30% more seats and around 20% faster journey times on our flagship route."

David Dickson, Network Rail route managing director for Scotland, added: "The proposals unveiled for the second phase of consultation demonstrate that we have listened to, and acted on, what people are telling us they want to see at the station.

"The feedback we receive in this second phase will be just as important in shaping a station which better serves passengers, serves Glasgow and creates a landmark development in this iconic location."
