ACHA Awards Two Major Contracts

The Argyll Community Housing Association (ACHA) has awarded two major contracts to two firms in Argyll.

The roof, roughcasting and external insulation contracts are worth a total of £5.1m.

M&K MacLeod of Lochgilphead will be the contractor responsible for the works in Islay and Dunbeg, while Stewart McNee Limited of Dunoon will carry out a similar project in Bute and Cowal.

The schemes will see essential roof, roughcast and energy efficiency improvements carried out to around 300 of ACHA's housing stock. It is anticipated that the works, which commence in August, will last for five months in Islay and eight months in Bute and Cowal.

Alastair MacGregor, Chief Executive ACHA, said: "I am delighted on two fronts. Firstly that we are able to resource these extensive modernisations to the external fabric of so many of our tenants' homes and, secondly, that two Argyll companies are taking this work forward. That can only be good for local jobs and livelihoods."

Murdo MacLeod, Managing Director of M&K MacLeod, said: "MacLeod Construction Limited is delighted to have been awarded contracts by Argyll Community Housing Association to render and re-roof homes in Dunbeg and Islay. The company is delighted to support ACHA's investment in Argyll particularly on our islands.

"In addition to the Islay and Dunbeg contracts, we are building affordable houses in Tarbert, Oban, Connel and Bowmore for ACHA. The Housing Association's investment in Argyll will not only improve housing stock available to our population but will maintain construction jobs in mainland and island Argyll and Bute."

Ian McNee, Managing Director of Stewart McNee Limited, added: "We are delighted to have been awarded the contract of re-roofing and render works to some 119 properties in the Bute and Cowal area.

"Not only does this secure the future of our existing staff for another year but with this contract, added to the 12 new build house contract for ACHA at Inveraray, we have recruited some six additional staff, two of which had previously been long-term unemployed."
