New Relief Road Opens To Traffic

Construction News Image
The third phase of the Bishopbriggs Relief Road project has been officially opened.

The road will connect Auchinairn Road and Westerhill Road and will provide better transport links, fresh investment and a reduction in traffic congestion.

On behalf of East Dunbartonshire Council and Taylor Wimpey West Scotland, the 755-metre link has been built by Luddon Construction as part of the nearby Taylor Wimpey housing development. A roundabout on Westerhill Road has also been completed.

Attending the official opening, Councillor Alan Moir, Convener of Development and Regeneration, said: "The new phase means better access to the M80 and will help to reduce the amount of traffic using residential streets. It will also have an impact on congestion in Bishopbriggs town centre - improving access, reducing pollution and cutting journey times.

"This is a key step towards improving links to and from Bishopbriggs and the important business location of Westerhill. Bishopbriggs Relief Road plays a key role in both our Local Transport Strategy and our Economic Development Strategy.

"Well done to everyone who has helped to bring this project to fruition. It has been delivered in partnership by East Dunbartonshire Council, Taylor Wimpey and Luddon Construction."

Willie Burns, Managing Director for Taylor Wimpey West Scotland, added: "This marks a further key milestone in the progress of Bishopbriggs Relief Road and Taylor Wimpey is delighted to see the works for phase three completed - marking our substantial and continued investment in the area.

"Along with our contractor, Luddon, our programme to deliver this phase of the Relief Road has been completed within our anticipated 12-month timescale and we know that it will make a huge difference to the local community."

Charlie Frize, Managing Director for Luddon Construction Ltd, commented: "As a local company Luddon Construction was pleased to be awarded the contract by Taylor Wimpey to construct this new road. There is no doubt that this recently completed phase, together with the planned phases four and five of the Relief Road will make a substantial difference to the flow of traffic in the area."

Phase one and two of the scheme connects drivers to the Robroystone roundabout and on to the M80. Work commenced on the £2.2m phase three scheme in July 2013, while the plans for phase four involve Wester Cleddens Road to Westerhill Road, with stage five going from Auchinairn to the Torrance roundabout. Timescales and detailed plans are still being finalised.
