According to the BBC, Dumfries and Galloway Council are to assess whether "unforeseen additional work" will see the project miss its completion date.
The work is said to be centred around a £1m upgrade around the town's Burns Statue.
An initial completion date of mid-June 2014 was given for the scheme, but now there are concerns that this deadline will not be feasible.

The local authority is understood to be in talks with contractors to see if the project will be completed in time.
The major improvement scheme got underway earlier this year, following a series of delays.

A spokesperson for the Council is quoted by the BBC as saying: "The Burns Statue improvements are ongoing – however there has been a need to undertake unforeseen additional work to address drainage issues and extra care has been needed to protect gas pipes and services.
"These have been necessary to ensure the services are upgraded and the project is delivered to a high standard. The council is continuing to work closely with the contractor and will be assessing whether the additional works have impacted on the completion date."
